Radiolab

The radiolab podcast that we listened to in class about Memory started a controversial discussion in the classroom. Should we delete someone's memory if they want to? I believe that we should be able to, but only to a point. If someone had a really traumatic experience, they should be able to erase the memory. Or as this procedure works, it removes them from the memory emotionally, which would allow the memory to still be there, they would just not feel the pain or fear anymore. I think this is a great discovery and could be great for people with post-traumatic stress disorder. However, if everyone were able to get rid of the unwanted memories in their lives, the world would be filled with happy careless people not afraid of getting hurt.

I really agree with you here. The science behind this disscovery is astonishing. The only problem i see is how we would stop it. I mean you could have doctors write a perscription for it, but that coudl be to much power in 1 persons hands. Good post!!

I completely disagree with you when you said "If someone had a really traumatic experience, they should be able to erase the memory." That's like saying if you take a bite of a mystery food and don't like it, you should be able to stop tasting it. You took the bite and you should be able to swallow it. Granted that may sound harsh, and I realize that people are forced into tramatic experiences and of course they don't choose to have terrible memories. But I believe that if you want to live life to the fullest, you should take everything that comes at you and deal with it in the best way you can.

So, say someone is raped. Should they have to live with that their whole lives? Did they "take the bite" and bring it upon themselves, or should they be able to forget about it??

Sometimes experiences shape humans. If someone was raped, then they may become a more cautious person, which could prevent something else from happening in the future. I can understand that it would be tramatic to be raped, but as long as people can learn to talk about it and forgive themselves, they can overcome it. But if there is an extreme case that cannot be sovled by talking or any other way, then I could understand the use of the drug.

It is so hard to say sometimes, because you never know how much a person can change after forgetting an important event in there life, and it might cause damage in their future if they get lured into the same trap.
